## Laying the Groundwork: Photoshopping Basics
When you first open Photoshop, you arrive in the _Photoshop_ window (see Figure 10-1). On the left side of the window, you see all of the layers for the image you’re currently editing. Your image is on the top layer and is usually named according to the page where you acquired the image. All of the layers are locked so that you can’t accidentally change the layers‘ contents. If you enable any of the layers (by double-clicking or right-clicking it), Photoshop highlights the layers in the layers panel that appear on the right side of the window.
The basic function of the Layers panel is to organize your image in a format that makes your editing tasks simpler. You can change the Layers panel’s display mode by clicking its menu button (to the left of the channels, brightness, and gamma arrows). Your choices are explained in Table 10-1. You can also change the Layers panel’s display mode by choosing View⇒Layers Panel⇒Layers Panel Options.

Layers | The Layers panel is the primary tool for managing your image’s layers. When you add a new layer, its name appears in the Layers panel and in the Layers palette. You see the names of all your layers in the list. You can move them up and down in the list so that they sit where you want them. You can also rename layers by double-clicking a

How to crop and resize an image in Photoshop Elements
You can crop your image to make it fit into a specific shape.
You can also resize an image so that it appears smaller, larger or just fits in a specific area on your screen.
Step 1: Open a new image and duplicate it
Go to File → New, select the appropriate image size and click OK.
You can duplicate your image and move it to another place, but the next step is to remove the duplicates.
You will often need to crop and resize images multiple times. Some projects need a specific size, but sometimes it’s better to use an image that is a little larger or smaller and crops it to meet your needs.
You can do that using the crop tool. On a tool palette, click the Crop tool and click and drag over the part of the image that you would like to crop off. When the crop is done, you can select either Crop or resize the cropped part.
Be careful! Cropping is not always the best way to resize your image. Your images can get distorted if you use the crop tool, so always resize your image first.
Step 2: Crop the top layer
If you’ve added an image to the background, you may want to crop it.
Go to Layers and select the background layer. Using the Crop tool, crop off the top, or if you don’t want to crop off the entire background, crop off the middle part.
Select the cropped top layer and go to Edit → Transform → Scale or double-click the layer and enter a scale value.
When you want to add back to the cropped part later, you can use the Move tool to move back the cropped layer to its original location.
Step 3: Resize the top layer
You can resize the top layer by going to Image → Canvas Size. This option changes the size of the entire image, including any cropped part of the layer.
However, some projects require a specific resizing. For that, you can use the Crop tool and resize the

# Taking Advantage of Screen Recording Software
Screen recording software is quite common nowadays. Using screen recording, you can record your screen (and, optionally, any attached microphones and sound devices) and save the recording to your computer. After you have the recording, you can trim it down, edit it, and speed up the recording.
This chapter provides information about screen recording software that is available with macOS, and includes information on how to use it to create a screencast and save it to a file.
# Using ScreenRecorder
If you own an Apple computer, the Apple suite of software called ScreenRecorder is built in. If you have an earlier version of MacOS X, the software is called _Apple Screen Recorder._ You access ScreenRecorder through the screen recording menu at the top of the screen, as shown in Figure 8-4.
