Some types of image editing, including creating PDF or JPG files, use other applications such as Adobe’s Illustrator or PaintShop Pro; for those people, nothing other than Photoshop will do. You can’t convert an image from PSD format to Illustrator without losing all information or letting Illustrator overwrite a PDF file.
Comparing PSDs with layers
An image in Photoshop is made up of layers. Layers are used to create complex effects or document objects, such as a cartoon character or an illustration. (For more about layers, check out Chapter 8.) In the following sections, I explain all the things a beginner needs to know about layers, including how they relate to one another and how to move and duplicate layers.
How layers work
When you first open a new project in Photoshop, a file called Default.psd is created in the Background folder of your workspace. (This file doesn’t get processed; all the changes you make to your image will affect the current image.)
As you make changes to the image, you may see other project files named in the current working directory. These are called copies, and they hold an identical copy of the current image file. (For example, if you move the Background layer — all the objects contained in the Background layer are moved with it — a copy is made so that you have a backup if you want to revert to the original image. An identical copy is also created if you rename a layer or change the name of the folder in which it’s located.) If you want to revert to the Default.psd file and carry on from there, simply choose Open from the File menu and navigate to Default.psd.
Photoshop uses a layer hierarchy system — a set of nested layers — to store and manage your image’s layers. Although the layering system enables you to create incredible effects, it also lends itself to the editing process. The layers enable you to edit your image separately and then layer by layer, keeping the previous layer intact until you replace it with a new layer.

Step 1: Start Adobe Photoshop Elements
Log in to your Adobe Photoshop Elements account. From the main screen, select Start and then Open.
On the following screen, select Open and then select Image Open, as shown in the figure below.
You will be taken to the Open dialog box. Select a file name from your computer and/or choose Browse to open a folder containing image files.
Select the image you want to work on and click Open.
To work on multiple images, right-click on any of the images and select Open as New Window.
Step 2: Create a New Document and Select the Size
In the main Photoshop Elements program, click on File and then New.
On the following screen, select a template for your new document as shown in the figure below.
When the new document opens, choose the size as shown in the figure below by clicking on the right-most arrow. For a regular document (3.5 inches by 8.5 inches), choose letter.
Step 3: Crop the Image
With a document open, click on Image on the main toolbar.
Click on Crop on the main menu, as shown in the figure below.
On the Crop dialog box, select the crop option, as shown in the figure below.
Click on the crop tool.
Step 4: Adjust the Brightness and Contrast
With the crop tool selected, double-click on any of the cropped edges to create guidelines.
On the main menu, click on Adjust and then Brightness/Contrast.
On the Brightness and Contrast dialog box, choose a setting as shown in the figure below. Click OK to save the setting.
Step 5: Apply an Effect
From the Adjust menu, choose Brightness/Contrast.
On the main menu, click on Enhance.
On the Enhance dialog box, select More and then choose Glow or Reflection and click OK to save the effect.
