Photoshop Elements is meant to be a tool used in combination with other programs to create images. If you want to use Photoshop Elements for serious editing you will want to learn Photoshop.

This guide will teach you all the techniques you need to know to become a Photoshop Elements expert and make the most out of the software. There are numerous books on the subject, but if you use Photoshop Elements often, you can save a lot of money and time by reading our guide in-depth.

To use the term professional in this guide, we mean that you should be able to create professional quality images using Photoshop Elements.

Whether you use Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or another photo editor, the process of editing images is the same. The end result will be different depending on which photo editor you use but the steps used to create the final image will be very similar.

Before we dive into the Photoshop Elements skills, let’s cover some basic introduction to Photoshop.

How Photoshop Works

The creative process begins when a photographer takes a photograph. The camera captures the scene as it appears to our eyes. A camera sensor records a picture to a file.

This file can be saved as a JPEG, a TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) or a RAW file. Your camera will save a RAW file if it doesn’t have an option to save it as a JPEG or TIFF file. It is important to save your RAW images as JPEGs or you may lose quality when you edit them.

After taking a photo you will use software to edit it.

There are many types of editing software. PhotoShop is one of the most popular photo editors available. It can be used to edit RAW and JPEG images. You can read more about RAW editing in our guide to RAW files.

The largest drawback of RAW editors is that you can only edit the image after it is converted to a format that is easily readable. In most cases you will have to downsize your image to be about four times the original size and still save it as a RAW file to edit

What’s New In Photoshop 2021 (Version 22.4.3)?

Adjustment layers allow you to add, remove, and re-color elements of the image.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to use the Clone Stamp to correct minor errors and add highlights in an image.

Preliminary Note

If you’re not a great artist, you may want to use a different creative program to practice your editing techniques.
Photoshop could be daunting to beginners who are not accustomed to working with a mouse and mouse pointer.
In this tutorial, I’ll outline a relatively simple image, just for you to test your skills.
If you find it hard to use the mouse, you should still be able to follow along with this tutorial.

Add A Background

Before you start, you need to decide what you want your background to be. Some people might prefer a simple white background, while others may prefer a photograph or a pattern.
Let’s look at the first three options:

White background with no major objects

A very simple background. This is one of the simplest options, because there are no major objects to contend with.

Black background with no major objects

An interesting background, but I wouldn’t use this as a daily background.

Styled background

A simple background (above) with plenty of minor details.

Import Your Image

You can find the image for this tutorial in the Chapter1 folder of this tutorial’s pages.
Let’s take a closer look at it.
On my monitor, I see a complex scene. I would like to use a portion of the image for the tutorial, so let’s pull the image into Photoshop.
To import the image into Photoshop, open the image and click File > Open. In my case, the image is called „tsunami“ and is saved in the GIMP file format (.xcf).
In most cases, the file type will be recognized by Photoshop and no special settings will be needed.

Let’s take a closer look at how it looks.
There are plenty of objects in the image, so it will take some time to select the area we want to work with.
The most visible element in the image is the boy holding the camera.
We’ll start by isolating the boy by using the lasso tool.
