Understanding Photoshop’s Layers
Layers are the heart of the Photoshop software. You can create an image with as many layers as you can imagine. An image can contain any combination of layers that you can imagine: a layer of text, a layer with an illustration, a layer with text that is layered over an image, or a layer with an image that is made transparent and then a layer of text over that.
In the Layers palette (as shown in Figure 1-2), you can see the various elements in your image with different colors, as shown in the figure. With a basic understanding of the Layers palette, you can do many different things to your image. You’re first introduced to Layers in Chapter 2, and you find out more about them in Chapters 4 through 6.

Managing Layers
You’re going to end up with a lot of layers. It’s easier to understand the concept of layers if you think of them as layers of tissue paper. You can place different-colored tissue-paper sheets on top of one another or use them to mask or hide an underlying layer. With layers, you can apply a color, motion, or transformation to any layer.
Each layer in the Layers palette is numbered from 0 to 99, starting with Layer 0, which is the background. Each layer has a unique color that identifies that layer. For example, layer 0 is solid black, layer 1 is solid white, layer 2 is transparent yellow, layer 3 is solid black, and so on. Just as a photo cut with a jigsaw has a layer of wood behind it, adding and placing different types of layers enables you to add information and manipulate your image.
As you place layers over your image, you can move them up and down in the layers palette so that you can create changes easily. You also can place multiple layers over one another. For example, you could have the background be a solid color and then create layers of text over that, as shown in Figure 1-3.

A 12-year-old child has died after being caught in an avalanche in Yosemite.
The three-person avalanche came off the west side of El Portal Road in Yosemite National Park at about 11:45 a.m. on April 4.
The first responders spotted the child and a man from El Portal at the base of the slide. Both were trapped in their snow caves.
The man was able to dig himself out of his cave and was able to pull the child out of hers.
The child, who has not been identified, was taken to a local hospital and was later pronounced dead.
According to Yosemite search and rescue officials, the child was buried by the avalanche, which followed a thunderstorm.
Officials have located the slide but there has been insufficient snow or weather conditions to safely enter the caves. Officials will take the necessary steps to recover the child’s body once the weather permits.Q:
