Nigeria will emulate India’s successful solar policy, and is determined to give access to technologies that can contribute to cutting energy costs, the country’s environment and energy minister said.
Nigeria is looking to increase the use of solar energy, Nidal Almajid told Reuters in an interview ahead of Nigeria’s signing of a 20-year renewable energy deal with South Korea on Thursday.
“This will be replicated in the Nigerian solar policy,” he said. The government wants to have solar on every roof to expand renewable energy use and reduce energy costs for farmers and the poor.
Nigeria’s state-owned Power Holding has ambitions to increase local manufacturing of solar panels and other parts of the solar power system.
Almajid, a former petroleum minister, said for the first time Nigeria’s oil and gas industry was open to renewables. “Our relations with the oil and gas industry are very good and there is a renewed interest from the sector in developing renewable energy,” he said.
