Which would mean if I store an integer in a MySQL database, it would be stored as a string?
If that’s the case, and it’s also known as a BYTE, how can I store integers in a MySQL database?

An INTEGER uses only 2 bytes for storing it. Strings in a database can be over 256 bytes, so an INTEGER can fit in, but some strings are even larger.
You do NOT store an INTEGER in a column, but use a DECIMAL(20,0) (or similar) or BIGINT(20) for numbers.
